The CCDB was designed with an eye towards re-analysis and re-use of high resolution 2D, 3D and 4D data  from light and electron microscopy,
and for mining the content of these datasets.   From its inception,  the CCDB provided not only the final data product, usually a 3D reconstruction, but the raw data, specimen preparation details, the imaging parameters and any derived data products created as a result of analysis of the reconstruction. Thus, the schema of the CCDB ensures that researchers can trace the provenance of a piece of data and understand the specimen preparation and
imaging conditions that led to it
