Only reset the SMC if you are having issues beyond the OS (ie, hardware issues, or if an Apple Tech directs you to.)
How to run Hardware Diagnostics
Follow the directions below on how to run Apple diagnostics in an event to check apple hardware for failures etc. These test may take up to 2 hours to complete depending on the type of hardware you have. Apple diagnostics checks all main components such as the CPU, on-board video, memory, and on-board bus/controllers. Apple diagnostics may not check (or have the ability to check) external attached cards or devices.
On Intel-based Macs
- Insert the Mac OS X Install disc 1 that came with your Mac
- On power up, press and hold the letter D
On PPC-based Macs
- Insert the Install Disc 1 that came with your Mac
- On power up, press and hold the 'alt + option' combination until you get the Apple Diagnostics prompt.
Both Architectures
- After language selection, use 'ctrl + L' keyboard combination to get it to loop mode, and select extended test, and let it run at least for a few hours. You can end the test with the same keyboard combo, or it will stop if it finds an error.
- For testing graphical or RAM errors, it is best to run the test at least for the evening, or even better to let it run the test overnight. If you receive an error message on the screen, it will indicate where the error lies.

- To check if your Apple Computer is under warranty, login below, or on Apple's Website. (This is useful to verify if your machine has AppleCare or any trouble tickets that are open.)
